Two people killed in early-morning crash in south Modesto, police report

A single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in south Modesto killed two people, the Police Department reports.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., dispatchers were advised of the crash at the intersection of South Carpenter and West Hatch roads, said Lt. Eric Schuller.

Patrol officers and then members of the Traffic Safety Unit arrived to find that a 2008 Honda Accord was northbound on Carpenter when the driver struck a raised concrete island and then a signal light pole. Both occupants were thrown from the car and died at the scene, Schuller said.

The road was closed for several hours for the investigation.

Little information was available later Sunday morning, including whether the ages and genders of the two who died. Nothing was available, either, on any factors that may have contributed to the crash.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Officer Justin Beverson of the Traffic Safety Unit at Beversonj@modestopd.com or 209-572-9592.

The people killed were identified Monday by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Pedro Rivera Ruiz, 19, and Nathaniel Perez, 20, both of Modesto.
