U.S. Coast Guard rescues 17 people on Lake St. Clair

Search called off for reported missing swimmer at Belle Isle beach

The U.S. Coast Guard had a busy day Friday, rescuing 17 people during two seperate incidents.

Staff received a distress call from a 12-metre vessel around 7 p.m. stating they were taking on water near the Grosse Point Yacht Club.

A crew from Station St. Clair Shores arrived on scene within 10 minutes and began bailing the boat using pumps.

Coast Guard members removed everyone from the boat and transferred them to shore and a tow boat brought the damaged vessel back in.

All of the passengers on board were adults who were wearing life jackets and there were no injuries.

The owner of the boat told the Coast Guard crew it may have struck something earlier that caused a small hole, according to a media release.

In a separate incident, a Coast Guard Auxiliary crew on Lake St. Clair witnessed two people fall into the water when their boat capsized.

The people were rescued and safely brought back to shore. There were no injuries.
