Estonia said on Thursday it will from next week prevent most Russians from entering the country with visas issued by Estonian authorities, cutting off a popular route into Europe's passport-free Schengen zone. While exceptions apply, the Foreign Ministry for Estonia, a European Union member, said it will also cease to issue visas to Russians for work, study and business in the country. "We have seen an enormous rise in the number of Russian citizens coming into or passing through Estonia," Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said in a statement.

Power was restored to nearly all NB Power customers early Thursday following a massive outage. On Wednesday, nearly 50,000 customers were without electricity. The outage was caused by a tree falling on a transmission line, NB Power spokesperson Dominique Couture said in an email to CBC News. By early Thursday, just a handful of customers in Fredericton and Moncton were still without power, Couture said the first report of an outage came in at 8:45 p.m.

The price of gas has risen sharply across Newfoundland and Labrador following two weeks of steady decreases. The unexpected change from the Public Utilities Board rose prices in all areas by 8.8 cents. Regular, unleaded gasoline now sits at $1.89 per litre on the Avalon, $1.91 in some parts of central Newfoundland and as high as $2.01 in Ramea.
