UK coronavirus cases surge by nearly 7,000 as death toll rises by 59

Coronavirus cases rose by nearly 7,000 on Thursday as a further 59 people died in the UK after testing positive for the virus.

According to the latest Government data, the number of Covid-19 infections rose by 6,914 in the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases in the UK to 460,178.

The UK death toll rose to 42,202 after a further 59 people died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Thursday.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been nearly 57,900 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The Government also revealed that there were 332 Covid-19 patients in mechanical ventilator beds as of Wednesday, up from 312 on Tuesday, and 2,276 Covid-19 patients currently in hospital, as reported on Tuesday, up from 2,252 reported on Monday.

There were 323 Covid-19 patients admitted to hospital and reported on Sunday, the latest figures available, bringing the total at that time to 141,964.

In England, there has been 44 more deaths in hospitals, NHS England said on Thursday. This brings the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 30,049.

Patients were aged between 60 and 99 years old and all had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths were between September 18 and September 30.

Five other deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

Scotland has recorded three new coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

The deaths, of patients who first tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days, take the toll under this measure to 2,522.

Speaking at Holyrood, the First Minister said 668 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in Scotland in the past 24 hours.

This is 10.8 per cent of newly-tested individuals, up from 10.3 per cent the previous day.

A total of 29,912 people have now tested positive in Scotland, up from 29,244 on Wednesday.

There are 154 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, up by 15 in 24 hours.

Of these patients, 17 were in intensive care, up two from the previous day.

In Wales, six further deaths had been reported, with the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic increasing to 1,622.

Public Health Wales said there had also been a further 398 cases of Covid-19 in Wales, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 24,383.

Northern Ireland has yet to release its figures.
