The United Kingdom did not give 100% permission to use its weapons to hit targets on the Russian territory, despite contradictory claims, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with The Guardian, published on May 31.

He made it clear that Ukraine wants to use long-range weapons, such as Storm Shadow missiles, to strike military targets in Russia.

"We raised this issue twice,” Zelenskyy said.

“We did not receive a confirmation from him (David Cameron, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain)."

Official London may be waiting for a similar step from Washington, he believes.

“Partners’ final decision depends on the ‘consensus’, in which US position is of decisive importance, Zelenskyy noted.

Ukraine has the right to use weapons provided by London to strike targets on Russian territory, and that Kyiv should decide whether to do so, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said on May 3.

Use of Western weapons on Russian territory

The U.S. does not "encourage" Ukraine to use American weapons to strike Russian territory, White House spokesperson John Kirby said on May 17.

Foreign weapons should be used "to reclaim Ukrainian sovereign territory" and this should occur "specifically on Ukrainian territory," the Pentagon emphasized.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated his opposition, on May 26, to Ukraine using Western weapons to strike Russian territory.

Finland and Sweden officially allowed to use their weapons to strike Russia, this decision was backed by Czechia, Poland, and other countries.

The White House has also allegedly secretly authorized Ukraine to strike Russian territory with American weapons, but only in the Kharkiv area, Politico reported on May 30.

Ukraine had already used Western weapons to strike Russian territory several times, most recently in Krasnodar, the AFP news agency, citing unnamed sources, reported.
