Heavy rain and strong winds forecast after brief return of settled weather
The Met Office has issued a fresh forecast after large parts of England and Wales were hit with intense downpours at the start of the week.
After days of heavy rain and flooding, the weather is set to become more settled – for a few days at least.
Large parts of England and Wales were hit with intense downpours at the start of the week and Met Office figures showed 10 English counties experienced their wettest September on record. Areas across England have suffered heavy rain, high winds and flooding in recent weeks, with hundreds of properties and farmland flooded and widespread travel disruption with roads closed and rail services suspended.
Southern England had its wettest September since 1918, and its third wettest in records dating back to 1836, the Met Office said. England saw 95% above-average rainfall and Wales had 37% more for the month, but Scotland was 37% below average and Northern Ireland was 18% down.
However, any initial heavy rainfall and cloud on Wednesday will turn lighter as the day progresses with a new weather front moving recent unsettled conditions south over the English Channel, the Met Office said.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Tony Wisson said: “After a drier interlude, the weather will gradually get wetter and windier through the weekend, as high pressure drifts away to the east and is slowly replaced with low pressure, bringing increasing amounts of wind and rain.
“This transition will initially affect western parts of UK, starting in northwestern areas on Friday but then more widely in western areas later on Saturday. These fronts will shift eastwards through the weekend, resulting in rain reaching most areas of the UK by Sunday. The highest rainfall totals through the weekend are most likely in the west and southwest, and generally lower further east.”
Temperatures are also expected to climb to around the seasonal average, with highs of 17C in south Wales and south-east England.
But the settled weather may come to an end on Sunday as the Met Office is predicting thundery showers, heavy and persistent rain and heavy winds. The forecaster said England and Wales will likely see the bulk of the rain, while temperatures are expected to drop across the country.
Looking further ahead, the Met Office says Hurricane Kirk, which is currently in the Atlantic, could lead to more heavy rain and strong winds by the middle of next week. However, the hurricane strength would be lost by the time it reaches the UK.
Wisson added: “One scenario suggests that this low pressure system could come close to, or even cross, the UK by Wednesday or Thursday next week. This would lead to heavy rain and strong winds in places.
“Another scenario is for the low pressure system to stay further west in the mid-Atlantic, keeping much of the associated rain and wind away from the UK.”
