Britain wakes up to a northwest-southeast split on Wednesday, with rain towards the north and west and bright, sunny spells across the southeast.

Cloudy skies will greet most of the country first thing, especially in northern and western areas where there will be some hill and coastal fog.

Meanwhile, the wet weather seen across northwest Wales and northwest England so far this week will remain, and it could edge its way back into central parts, southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland. Here, temperatures are expected to hit the high teens and low 20s.

Marco Petagna, a senior operational meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “There’s the potential for 20 to 30mm of rain towards the north and northwest and there will be some heavy bursts around.

“But we’re not expecting any warnings and it should fizzle out overnight.”

It is a different story for east Anglia, the southeast and northeast Scotland, especially Aberdeenshire, where it will be a dry, bright and warm day.

Temperatures could reach as high as 27C around Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, and it will be warm and breezy.

The evening will bring more cloud and further showers across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western England, and it will feel humid in the south, with temperatures in the low- to mid-teens for most overnight.

Thursday brings much of the same with a cloudy start that will break up throughout the day to allow some sunshine in places, before blazing temperatures return for the southeast on Friday.
