Animal rescue workers were in for a surprise after stumbling upon this unusual kitten who resembles a mythical creature of the night.

The Lykoi - also known as the “Werewolf Cat” - is a ultra-rare cat breed known for a genetic mutation featuring patchy, wild looking dark hair and a narrow bald face, giving these cats an almost canine appearance.

As The Dodo reports, this particular kitten was actually part of a litter of typical looking short-haired tabby cats found in Cape Town, South Africa, by volunteers at TEARS Animal Rescue.

TEARS staff immediately noticed how much their new wolf-like cat, which they named Eyona, stood out from his brothers and sisters. Not only did he look completely different from the other cats, but he also acted like a different animal altogether.

“He’s playful like a dog. He’ll look you in the eyes with a sense of great attachment, unlike most feral cats. He’ll even drag his blanket around with him. It’s like he doesn’t know how to be a kitty,” said TEARS operations manager Mandy Store.

Rescue workers eventually consulted with a Lykoi expert, who confirmed that Eyona is only the 35th known natural occurrence of this genetic mutation happening in the wild.

Lykois are highly prized by certain cat breeders looking to recreate these unique characteristics, but Eyona will not be joining any such breeding program.

This unusual kitten was instead adopted by a trusted foster home, where he’ll be able to live out his days prowling the night like any typical werewolf would.
