One of the more surprising outcomes of the weekend was UMass’ 30-27 double-overtime upset win over five-win Appalachian State.

The Minutemen were just 1-6 entering Saturday’s game, but were able to push the game into overtime when Logan Laurent hit a 45-yard field goal with five seconds left in regulation. The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime, but an Appalachian State fumble on its possession in double-overtime set the stage for Laurent to be the hero.

He delivered, drilling a game-winning 36-yarder, and followed it up with one of the better celebrations of the season. Watch this:

Laurent was so excited about hitting the game-winner that he did a backflip. He landed it perfectly, too.

It was Laurent’s third field goal of the day on three tries. He also hit a 47-yarder in the first quarter as UMass jumped out to a 10-0 lead. But the Mountaineers stormed back and eventually took a 20-17 lead with 4:42 left in regulation.

After the teams traded punts, UMass regained possession with 1:50 to go. Ross Comis, in at quarterback after a scary injury to starter Andrew Ford (he was released from the hospital Saturday night), led the Minutemen into App State territory. Even after the Mountaineers called back-to-back timeouts to try to ice Laurent, he made the 45-yard try to send the game to overtime.

Laurent, who also serves as the team’s punter and has a career 41.9-yard average, is now 5-for-5 on field goal tries this season and 24-of-32 for his career. Laurent has been the team’s top kicker in previous seasons, but ceded the role to redshirt freshman Michael Schreiner early in the year. However, after Schreiner missed his first four attempts, Laurent began doing double duty as both punter and kicker for the Minutemen once again.

UMass started the season 0-6 but is now 2-6 after consecutive wins over Georgia Southern and Appalachian State. The Minutemen return to the field against No. 21 Mississippi State in Starkville on Saturday.
