Undercover agent testifies against Jahanzeb Malik, accused in Toronto bomb plot

An Immigration and Refugee Board hearing for Jahanzeb Malik heard testimony Wednesday from an RCMP undercover agent whose identity is covered by a sweeping publication ban.

Malik is facing deportation for an alleged bomb plot in Toronto.

The government is attempting to deport him rather than have him face criminal charges. He is currently a permanent resident of Canada.

The agent testified that Malik told him that his family had disowned him and his mother and brother called him a terrorist because of his extremist views.

The agent said Malik also told him he had "brainwashed" a Turkish friend who was a non-practising Muslim.

He said he convinced the friend to travel to Yemen to fight with ISIS. Malik even claimed to have arranged a visa to Yemen and purchased airfare for the Turkish friend, he said.

The agent said Malik told him the Turkish friend decided not to go at the last minute.

The agent was testifying about the extremist online videos from ISIS and others that Malik allegedly favoured and showed him.

Malik came to Canada from Islamabad in 2004 on a student visa to attend York University. He acquired permanent residency in 2009.

He is estranged from his wife in Canada, with whom he has two children. Malik was arrested in March for an alleged plot to bomb the U.S. consulate and other targets in Toronto.

Malik is represented by a lawyer but is refusing to participate in the hearing and wishes to leave the country.
