As cinemas look to reopen following the coronavirus lockdown, Unhinged is set to be the first movie out of the gate.

The road rage thriller starring Russell Crowe and Westworld star Jimmi Simpson sees a man (Crowe) go to extreme and violent lengths to get an apology from a woman (Caren Pistorius) after a traffic dispute.

Unlike the number of films which have been pushed back due to coronavirus, Unhinged will be the first movie brought forward and is now poised for a July 1 release in the US.

The president of Solstice Studios, which made Unhinged, said the decision was encouraged by polls which showed movie-goers are keen to return to cinemas.

"We are most definitely the canary in the coal mine," Mark Gill told Sky News.

"We have some reasonable confidence that theatres will be open, but there's a risk. If things go wrong and public health departments need to shut things down, they should and they will.

"This is one of those steps that we all need to take toward getting back to normal."

The announcement follows UK cinemas revealing their plans for when they can re-open.
