United Airlines ending direct flight to New York City

United Airlines is ending its direct, non-stop service between Edmonton and New York City in October.

The flight to Newark, New Jersey, was launched to much fanfare in May 2013 as it was the only direct flight from Edmonton to the New York area.

The flight will end as of Oct. 25, 2014. The airline says that the route was “underperforming.”

This isn’t the first time an airline has ended a direct flight from Edmonton to a major city.

Last fall, Air Canada announced it was suspending its direct flight between Edmonton and London’s Heathrow Airport from January through March.

The airline was upset that Edmonton International Airport made a big deal over the new Icelandair flight to Reykjavik, which could be used to get to European destinations.
