Unlicenced drivers, traffic violators keep RNC busy

Man arrested for shoplifting at sex shop comes back again — and again — all in one day

Unlicenced drivers, outstanding fines and impairment violations kept the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary busy on the Northeast Avalon and in Corner Brook overnight.

Impairment by drugs

An 18-year-old man was charged Saturday, following an incident that took place on May 8.

Police had received a report of an unconscious man in the driver's seat of a vehicle in St. John's.

The RNC said the man was given immediate medical treatment, and investigators obtained search warrants for blood samples.

An analysis by the National Forensic Laboratory revealed quantities of alprazolam, oxycodone and codeine were present.

Police said the man has been charged with care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired by a drug. He was released to appear in provincial court in November.

Traffic stop

RNC officers pulled over a man in Mount Pearl around 1 p.m. Saturday, and found he was driving without a valid licence.

The 38-year-old was then charged under the Highway Traffic Act for operating an unregistered vehicle without insurance or a licence.

Police seized and impounded the vehicle.

Canada-wide driving prohibition

Around 5 p.m. Saturday, RNC officers pulled over a male driver in the Upper Gullies area.

Police said he was found to have a Canada-wide driving prohibition, thus suspended from driving.

The vehicle was impounded and the man was detained for a provincial court appearance.

No valid driver's licence

Corner Brook police pulled over a male driver Sunday morning on Howley Road, when an RNC officer noticed the pickup he was driving didn't have its headlights on.

Police said the 18-year-old did not have a driver's licence.

He was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with driving without a valid licence.
