Unresponsive woman given opiate antidote in parked car with 2 kids in back seat

Paramedics had to administer naloxone to an unresponsive woman in the parking lot of a Winnipeg shopping centre this week.

Winnipeg police said officers were called to check the well-being of a woman in a car at Kildonan Place shopping centre at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

United Firefighters of Winnipeg president Alex Forrest said a woman was found unresponsive in the car and paramedics administered naloxone, which is used to counteract opiate overdoses.

Dylan Bridgeford was coming out of the mall and saw people gathered around a car in the parking lot.

"Nobody actually knew what was going on," he said. "I thought it was respiratory problems … too much heat. It was very humid there [Wednesday]."

Paramedics showed up not long afterward, Bridgeford said.

"It was shock.… Everybody was shocked, really," he said. "You just don't expect something like that, especially in this area."

Police said no charges have been laid.
