Floods could hit parts of the UK as Storm Barbara continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the country.

Storm Barbara, named by Spanish meteorologists, brought miserable weather to much of the UK on Wednesday.

Multiple weather warnings were issued as the Met Office said around 10-15mm of rain was due to fall, with as much as 30-50mm in a few locations.

Another yellow weather warning for rain has been issued across the north of Scotland as the remnants of the storm is expected to cause some flooding on roads on Wednesday evening. It is due to expire by 8am on Thursday.

Flood alerts have been issued for the North Sea Coast from Whitby to Filey, the Rivers Clyst and Culm in the south and the River Cole and Dorcan Brook.

The Environment Agency warned overtopping waves and spray could lead to flooding in the coastal areas.

Brits are advised to take extra care when walking along beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill told the Evening Standard that Thursday is expected to be "more drier" than Wednesday.

"There will be outbreaks of rain across parts of Scotland and Northern England, but these should ease from the west, particularly as we go into the afternoon," said Mr Burkill.

"Elsewhere across the rest of the UK, there will be some sunny spells with a few showers."

He warned that on Thursday some parts of the south east could see "the odd rumble of thunder".

"We will probably get highs of 17C, possibly 18C, which is around average for this time of year," said Mr Burkill.

"It should feel quite a bit more pleasant on Thursday"

The more unsettled weather is due to come through on Friday and last until Sunday.

Blustery showers are set to feed in with rain forecast for north western parts of the UK.

Temperatures are due to reach the mid-teens and by Saturday most places are likely to see strong rain and heavy winds, said the Met Office meteorologist.

Mr Burkill added: "The unsettled theme will continue into Sunday.

"There may not be as much rain around but there will still be some pretty hefty showers and strong winds will remain, especially across the north west where there is the risk of some severe gales.

"It is going to be quite a windy picture this weekend."
