UofT teaching assistants' union reaches tentative deal

The union representing thousands of University of Toronto teaching assistants said it reached a tentative agreement in its bargaining process overnight on Thursday.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees 3902's bargaining team said it reached the tentative deal around 2:45 a.m., shortly after the midnight strike deadline, but did not immediately release details.

"All seven bargaining team members believe that this is an agreement we can proud of, with many significant gains for our members," CUPE said in a news release.

The union had sought a wage hike for the some 6,000 teaching assistants, who it says make around $15,000 per year.

Teaching assistants are set to vote on the deal around 3:30 p.m. today at the downtown campus.

Meanwhile, around 4,000 teaching assistants at York University could strike at midnight on Tuesday of next week. Those employees are represented by CUPE Local 3203.
