Upstreet Craft Brewing holds giant pumpkin drop to launch new beer

Upstreet Craft Brewing decided to celebrate Thanksgiving, a new pumpkin beer and a food drive for the local food bank in a unique way.

They put a 400-pound pumpkin in a harness, used a crane to lift it as high as it would go with plans to drop it on a scarecrow below.

However, the quick-release knot didn't release and it took a few shakes of the crane's boom to drop the pumpkin to the ground. The resulting smash left behind a mess of the pumpkin shell and guts.

Joey Seamen of Upstreet Craft Brewing said the bottom of the big pumpkin was rotting.

"It was either going to go on its on or we were going to drop it, so we made the decision to drop it," he said.

The pumpkin drop launched a month-long food drive for the Upper Room Food Bank.

"They're having a lot of fun with things and every food drive makes a difference," said food bank manager Mike MacDonald.

"It's more groceries than we had yesterday."
