US Covid-19 Cases Top 5m

More than 5m Americans have now tested positive for Covid-19, the latest figures show.

The huge total account for more than a quarter of all cases worldwide, under data shared by the World Health Organisation (WHO) – by far the highest for any single country globally.

On Thursday it emerged that 300,000 Americans could die of the virus by December 1, according to modelling carried out by the University of Washington – though they also said 70,000 lives could be saved if people were scrupulous about wearing masks.

A death toll of 300,000 would near-double the current total, which as of Sunday stands at more than 162,000.

The US is followed by Brazil, which on Saturday confirmed that it had surpassed 100,000 deaths, ahead of Mexico which is currently third in the world with more than 52,000.

The UK still has the fourth-highest number of Covid-19 deaths in the world with more than 46,000 deaths.
