U.S. election reaction: PM Trudeau 'very cautious' about saying anything that could interfere with incredibly close presidential race
The U.S. presidential election is getting close to the finish line, as Joe Biden pushes ahead of Donald Trump in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Nevada.
But Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was cautious in his comments about the American electoral process, including plans from Trump to challenge the vote count in many states.
“Obviously we are watching, as everyone is, the processes in the United States unfold,” Trudeau said at a press conference on Friday. “We will continue to have confidence in the American institutions that have managed their electoral processes over many decades and indeed centuries.”

“We will continue to be alert so we can ensure we’re protecting Canadian interests and Canadian values in regards to our closest trading partner and nearest neighbour.”
The prime minister went on to stress the importance of electoral processes around the world to occur without “foreign interventions or interference.”
“We always think about the concern about hostile actors interfering or intervening in electoral processes but even friends can have an influence on public discourse around internal processes that are key to defending democratic institution,” Trudeau said. “That’s why we are going to remain very cautious about making any pronouncements in regards to the electoral processes in the United States until the outcome is sufficiently clear.”
In anticipation of the potential win, people in Canada have taken to social media to comment on the big change on Friday morning.
Waking up to Biden leading in EVERY remaining state. I can feel my anxiety disappearing. Not counting any wins yet, but man does this feel good. Americans - you can finally breathe! #Elections2020

Joe Biden is going to be the 46 President of the United States, and black women like Stacy Abrams made that happen.
Underestimate the power, strength and resiliency of black women at your own peril.#Electionsresults2020 #Elections2020 #FridayThoughts pic.twitter.com/Iu1OWa12Jm— Denise 🇯🇲🇨🇦 (@browncdngirl) November 6, 2020

Many also expressed particular excitement about the prospect of Kamala Harris becoming the next U.S. vice president.
The first Black woman and the first Indian woman to serve as Vice President of the United States.
Excited for young kids that see Kamala Harris and dream bigger as a result.— Avish Sood (@AvishSood) November 6, 2020

Congratulations to kamala Harris for being the first woman Vice President and first woman of colour Vice President. 4 years ago Hilary Clinton ran on breaking that glass ceiling. Today is the day that glass ceiling has been desecrated! 🎉🎉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ pic.twitter.com/UXjQI9ddhg

Many also commented on how Republicans will respond if Trump wins the presidency, with the possibility of many speaking out against his actions as the President of the United States.
Now that Trump has lost, all the spineless Republicans will come out of their caves to condemn him because he’s no longer valuable to them politically. Very brave https://t.co/U5BZF1hamf

@gop @SenateGOP Are you for the American people and country or are simply only for Donald Trump? Your silence is damning for you all. He is embarrassing himself and your party. How can you possibly support his behaviour? #shame. @cnnbrk https://t.co/WC5fzVQoWB

Those Republicans who would speak up are no longer in the Republican party. They either sit as Independents or right leaning Democrats (Centrists or Progressives)
But if you choose silence, than you have indeed choosen evil https://t.co/Wgz5wg6POU— Tony 🍁 Cosada (@Cosada_) November 6, 2020
