Christian Pulisic’s maiden season with Chelsea may have ended in disappointment with a hamstring injury in last week’s FA Cup final loss to London rival Arsenal, a match in which he scored. But his spectacular debut campaign in the vaunted English Premier League didn’t go unappreciated.

On Friday, the Premier League announced that the 21-year-old Pulisic was one of eight players nominated for its prestigious Young Player of the Season award. He’s in good company, too. The other candidates are Pulisic’s Blues teammate Mason Mount; Manchester United trio Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial; and Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa) and Dean Henderson (Sheffield United). Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling took home the hardware last season after helping the Sky Blues to consecutive English titles.

Pulisic scored nine goals and added six assists in just over 1,700 minutes on the field in 2019-20, helping Chelsea to a top-four finish and the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League berth that comes with it. He was one of the top performers in all of the Prem after the planet’s most popular sports league restarted in June following a three-plus month interruption because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea has not yet announced when the United States men’s national team headliner is expected to return to full fitness, but manager Frank Lampard said after the loss to the Gunners that Pulisic would miss Saturday’s Champions League round of 16 second leg against Bayern Munich. The Pennsylvania native missed the first match of the two-game, total goals series — which took place way back in February — with an adductor injury that sidelined him for the first three months of the calendar year.

Fans can cast their vote for the winner on the Premier League website.
