Utah Football Player Andre Seldon Jr. Dies in Apparent Cliff-Diving Accident: 'Incredible Person and Teammate'
"Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own," Utah State coach Nate Dreiling said while paying tribute to Seldon Jr.
Utah State University is mourning the loss of one of its beloved football players, Andre Seldon Jr.
On Saturday, July 20, at approximately 9:05 p.m. local time, Seldon Jr. was found by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team after an apparent cliff-diving incident at Porcupine Reservoir, the Utah State Aggies' website confirmed. Per ESPN, the late football player was 22.
A press release shared by the Cache County Sheriff's Office in Logan on Facebook stated deputies were dispatched to the dam at approximately 2:20 p.m. "following reports of a possible drowning."
"Initial information indicates that a young adult male was seen diving from cliffs into the water and did not resurface," the message signed by Lt. Tim Ramirez confirmed.
A further update from the sheriff's office stated, "Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information," adding, "Our heartfelt [condolences] go to family and friends of the student-athlete."
Paying tribute to Seldon Jr. on the college team's website, interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling said, "Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own."
The site confirmed the athlete was scheduled to start classes at Utah State this fall semester, after joining the school's football program over the summer.
"He most recently played for two seasons at New Mexico State University with USU Interim Head Coach Nate Dreiling. Prior to that, he spent two seasons at Michigan," the message read, confirming Seldon Jr. "prepped at Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan."

"Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate," Dreiling added in his tribute. "Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre's family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss."
"Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr.," Vice President and Director of Athletics, Diana Sabau, shared, per the website.
"We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre," Sabau added.
Athletics staff and student-athletes have been offered emotional and mental support following the tragic loss.
