Valentine’s drug bust

Kahnawake Peacekeepers arrested a local woman after more than 50 cannabis items were seized in a drug bust.

The 27-year-old Kahnawa’kehró:non was later charged with distribution of illicit cannabis and possession for the purpose of distribution. On February 13, the Peacekeepers executed a search warrant on Rabaska Road. Constable Kyle Zachary said that it had been brought to their attention that a community member was selling drugs advertised as Valentine’s packages through multiple social media platforms.

“It was different forms of cannabis, infused, different kinds of food, chocolate, powder mix for drinks, oils, gummies and dried buds,” said Zachary.

According to Zachary, the suspect was released on a promise to appear at Longueuil courthouse. The sale of cannabis products remains illegal as Kahnawake is still in the process of finalizing its cannabis control law.

“We don’t target cannabis itself. You can possess it, but it has to be from a legal source,” said Zachary. “Edibles are legal to possess, but illegal to sell. That’s the reason why the operation went forward.”
