Vancouver police headquarters attacked by man with smoke grenade

A man is in custody after attacking Vancouver police headquarters at 2120 Cambie St., with a smoke grenade police said Saturday in a news release.

"Shortly after 11:30 this morning, a 28-year-old man threw a smoke grenade into the lobby of the police station at 2120 Cambie Street. As he left the building he was quickly taken into custody by officers," said Const. Brian Montague.

Montague said the damage caused by the device was minor and no one was hurt.

The building was evacuated. It was eventually cleared by a Hazmat team.

Police say they will be recommending several charges including mischief, assaulting a police officer, and administering a noxious substance.

Montague said the accused is known to police.
