Vancouver school trustee wants to revamp safety measures

A Vancouver School Board trustee is calling on the board to reexamine safety measures in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., and a lockdown last year at a local elementary school.

Ken Denike plans to raise his concerns at a school board meeting slated for Monday night.

"We have basically a poor system — poorest in the sense that a large number of the entrances of schools are open and unmonitored,” he said.

“We have a sign inside that says we report to the office and the office may be two floors up."

Denike is calling on the board to keep school doors locked during the day.

"Are we going to stick with the open door policy?” he said. “I think it … may have run its course."

He's also calling for better communication with first responders and more input from parents.
