Vandals use chainsaw to slice 80-year-old tree in LaSalle park

An 80-year-old tree at a public park in LaSalle must come down after vandals sliced it with a chainsaw, the Town of LaSalle says.

The town says someone intentionally damaged the two huge trees in Kenwood Park.

In a Facebook post, the town says it's the second time a large tree was vandalized in a park in LaSalle.

A similar incident took place at Lafferty Park in November 2015 and trees damaged there also had to be taken down.

LaSalle police said in their own Facebook post that worker from the parks and recreation department call about two damaged trees in Kenwood Park

Two poplar trees with trunks nearly a metre wide and standing almost 30 metres high had cuts between five and 13 cm deep.

"Due to the trees structural integrity being compromised and the possibility they could fall on ... a house or on children and adults who frequent the park; a tree removal service was on scene [Thursday] to cut off the big limbs before they take down the trees," reads the Facebook post by the police.

Anyone who has any information or has seen something suspicious at the park is asked to contact LaSalle police.
