Man driving vintage car ‘partially ejected’ in Sawgrass Expressway crash, troopers say
A man driving a vintage Ford was “partially ejected” from his car Wednesday afternoon after colliding with another vehicle on the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward County, according to authorities.
The driver, who is in his 70s, was taken to Broward Health North with life-threatening injuries, said Lt. Indiana Miranda, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman. The driver of the other car, a man in his 40s, was transported to HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital in Tamarac with non-incapacitating injuries, she added.
Around 3:15 p.m., the vintage Ford collided with a blue Nissan Sentra when both drivers attempted to enter the center lane from opposite directions, Miranda said. Following the crash, the Ford veered back to the right lane before spinning out of control, crashing into the shoulder’s guardrail and turning onto its side on the center lane.
According to Miranda, the driver was partially ejected from his vehicle, a convertible with no roll bar or cage.
The crash shut down the highway’s southbound lanes, causing traffic to back up for miles. Before 5 p.m., things returned to normal.
