The Venice Film Festival is still scheduled to go ahead as planned, organisers have confirmed.

The star-studded event, which takes place in the Italian city annually in September, will be held as a physical event unlike many of its counterparts, which have been forced to be cancelled, postponed or turned into virtual versions of themselves, including the Cannes Film Festival, which was initially due to take place in late June.

Luca Zaia, the governor of Veneto, confirmed on Monday that the Venice Film Festival had been given the green light to go ahead on the planned dates, between the 2 and 12 September, although he did warn that there would likely be fewer films involved than usual. It is also expected that the event may look slightly different to how it has in the past with the necessary safeguards and protections in place as a result of the pandemic.

Before coming to the decision, the organisers surveyed a wide range of film executives and agents to determine how many actors, filmmakers and producers would be willing to attend the event, according to Variety.

"We know that it would be simply impossible to plan a festival without knowing if you all are willing to use the festival to give a new start and a strong sign for keeping cinema alive, even in these difficult times," Venice Film Festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera said in the letter.

The Venice Film Festival is the world's longest-running film festival and usually draws in some of the most famous film stars in the world, with Cate Blanchett heading up the jury this year.
