Veterans should park for free in Halifax, says Coun. Brad Johns

Halifax cancels parking enforcement contract after phony tickets issued

The councillor for Upper Sackville-Beaverbank thinks the Halifax Regional Municipality should offer free parking to people with veteran's licence plates.

"It would be really nice to be able to recognize the people have fought for our country and other countries around the world," said Coun. Brad Johns.

He would like to see the free parking offer to include municipal parking lots and parking meters throughout the municipality. Johns plans to ask for a report on the idea at Tuesday's regional council meeting.

He says it will mainly apply to military personnel who served in more modern conflicts such as Afghanistan.

Johns doesn't think it would mean a big bill for the municipality.

"Even if you look across the whole province and said, 'OK, how many veteran plates are there across the province,' I don't think it's that significant of a number," said Johns.

"I think it says a lot to be able to do that for our veterans," he said.
