Vice President Kamala Harris Selects Her Running Mate: Tim Walz
Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen her running mate: Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota.
"Tim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families," Harris wrote in a campaign text message. "I know that he will bring the same principled leadership to our campaign, and to the office of the vice president."
The decision comes quickly—it was just a little over two weeks ago that President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the presidential race.
"I revere this office, but I love my country more," he said in an address from the Oval Office three days later. "It’s been the honor of my life to serve as your president. But in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think it’s more important than any title. I draw strength and find joy in working for the American people. But this sacred task of perfecting our union is not about me, it’s about you. Your families, your futures."
Soon after Biden withdrew from the race, he endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, to replace him on the ticket. With Harris the presumptive Democratic nominee (it'll be official later this month at the Democratic National Convention), she had to chose her running mate—and chose one quickly, due to ballot deadlines.
Walz was on a shortlist of vice president candidates that Harris's team vetted in the last two weeks. The other finalists reportedly included Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois.
