Victims of Cougar 491 remembered on 8th anniversary of crash

Eight years ago, 18 people boarded Cougar Flight 491 at the St. John's airport for a routine flight to oilfields off the coast of Newfoundland.

The flight never made it, and only one person aboard made it back home.

Families marked the eighth anniversary as they have every year since the crash, with flowers, wreaths and banners along the airport fence near where the helicopter was boarded.

The helicopter plummeted into the ocean 55 kilometres southeast of St. John's, 11 minutes after one of the two pilots reported that the helicopter's gearbox was losing oil pressure.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. at Corpus Christi Church on Waterford Bridge Road in St. John's.
