East St. Louis High School investigates ‘incident’ between teacher and student
East St. Louis School District 189 said Wednesday it is investigating an incident between a teacher and a student.
Video that surfaced on social media purportedly shows a physical confrontation that led a teacher to swing his right fist at a student in a classroom. The district launched the investigation on Tuesday, after the incident occurred. The video surfaced later.
Sydney Stigge-Kaufman, director of communications and strategic partnerships for the district, released a statement: “As always our top priority is the safety of our students and staff. We are in the process of investigating an incident between a teacher and a student. Appropriate consequences will be applied after the completion of a thorough investigation.”
The social media video also shows the student leaning back on top of a desk as the teacher has his left arm on the right leg of the student, who is swinging both of his arms. The four-second video ends with a third person stepping in between the teacher and student.
