Aircraft Tackle Wildfires Northeast of Rome Amid Heatwave

Italian firefighters continued efforts to bring under control two wildfires burning in the hills near L’Aquila, northwest of Rome, on August 1.

Local firefighters were joined by aerial support and reinforcements from three other areas, Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian fire service, reported.

The fires were burning on Mount Pettino and Mount Omo. These video show firefighting efforts on both mountains, authorities said, and an amphibious air tanker refueling nearby at Lake Campotosto.

The Italian health ministry published a level-three weather warning on Friday, the country’s highest warning level, as temperatures in many areas were expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) over the weekend, local reports said. Credit: Vigil del Fuoco via Storyful
