Arab League backs Saudi led strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen

A number of Sunni led Arab states have joined Saudi Arabia in air strikes against Shi’ite Houthi rebels trying to oust Yemini President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Overnight warplanes bombed the main airport in rebel held Sanaa and the nearby al Dulaimi military air base. The Arab League convened in Egypt to back the use of force in Yemen. The Arab League Secretary General Nabil al Araby said: “The military operation took place after the failure of all attempts to stop the Houthi coup. After its continued attacks against the constitution and the will of the Yemeni people.” Iran has condemned the action against the Tehran-linked Houthi group and called for a halt to the aggression. Iran denies bankrolling the rebels The Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said the violence will solve nothing: “Military action, especially military action from outside Yemen will offer no result except the bloodshed and massacre of the people of Yemen.”
