Berlin's twin panda cubs celebrate first birthday

Panda twins turn one

at Berlin Zoo

Pit and Paule

celebrated their birthday

with a sweet potato and beetroot ice cake

Zookeepers say the pair still need a lot of sleep

but are making excellent progress

(SOUNDBITE) (German) ZOOKEEPER, NORBERT ZAHMEL, SAYING:

"If they happen to be feeling playful then the visitors are of course delighted. I mean black and white is cute anyway and then that clumsiness that they have, it lights everyone up and even the toughest customers get caught up with how sweet they are. It really is very emotional to watch them play."

Pit and Paule are Germany’s only giant pandas

currently on loan from China

and with only 1,860 left in the wild
