Startling new footage from the frontlines of the battle against the more than 5300 square acre Valley Fire blazing east of San Diego, California.

The footage captured Sunday by fire captain Steve Russo of the Lakeside Fire District documents what he and his fellow firefighters are up against.

Thick plumes of smoke and temperatures soaring to 108 degress as the unchecked fire rages on in the eastern edge of a metro area of more than 3 million people.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in the five counties plagued by wildfires blazing across the state.
