First victims of Volgograd suicide bomb attack buried

In Volgograd, the first funerals for victims of Sunday’s train station attack have taken place, as emotional residents lay flowers at a memorial at the railway station. Twenty-nine-year-old Sergei Nalibayko and 27-year-old Leonid Sushchev were buried on December 31. Many locals are still shocked about the attacks. A local woman said: “It’s hard to talk. I can’t. We were born here, grew up here, and there’s never been anything like this.” Over 5,000 police officers have been mobilised in an anti-terrorism operation. Hundreds of people have been searched. Dozens have been detained for resisting police, possessing weapons, or failing to produce documents.
