Giant mural highlights plight of bees

STORY: The mural, created to coincide with world bee day, was painted on the playing field of Hebden Royd Primary School using paints traditionally used to draw the lines for soccer field.

It's the creation of Dave Martin and Jamie Wardley, whose daughter attends the school.

Rising temperatures are contributing to drastic declines of bumblebees across Europe and North America at rates “consistent with a mass extinction”, threatening food cultivation.

Declining bee populations have also been linked to heavy pesticide use and habitat loss caused by changes in land use, with global warming exacerbating their plight.

In addition to their playing field getting a new look, children at the school have been creating a wild flower meadow to help encourage the pollinators.
