Greece’s first female PM sworn in
Greece has its first female prime minister, albeit for three weeks. Vassiliki Thanou is the country’s top Supreme Court judge and will lead the country to elections expected next month. Her new government will be sworn in on Friday. The 65-year-old is has been described as an anti-austerity advocate. She made a name for herself as a judge who openly battled against wage cuts imposed on the Greek judiciary to please European and IMF lenders. Greece has its first woman PM, albeit transitionally. Meanwhile Thursday (August 27)was Alexis Tspiras last day in the office after resigning over a bailout rebellion. He remains hugely popular and is already leading opinion polls. But Tspiras is not expected to expected to get an absolute majority which may will force him to find a coalition partner. Failing that, a second round of elections could be held. Tspiras has reiterated that his Syriza party would not cooperate with the New Democracy party and the Socialist PASOK which ruled Greece for decades.
