Greece’s first female PM is top judge Vassiliki Thanou

Greece has its first female prime minister. Vassiliki Thanou is the country’s top Supreme Court judge and will lead the country to elections expected on September 20. Her new government will be sworn in on Friday (August 28). Greece has its first woman PM, albeit transitionally. Meet Vassiliki Thanou, #Greece’s senior judge. LOVING HER. pic.twitter.com/eXpaoVoy9G— Alex Andreou (@sturdyAlex) August 27, 2015 The 65-year-old is has been described as an anti-austerity advocate. She made a name for herself as a judge who openly battled against wage cuts imposed on the Greek judiciary to please European and IMF lenders. Meanwhile, Thursday (August 27)was Alexis Tspiras last day in the office. He resigned as prime minister last week over a bailout rebellion. Despite a U-turn to accept further austerity cuts as part of a third bailout programme, Tspiras remains hugely popular and is expected to win the election. But he is not expected to expected to get an absolute majority. That will force him to find a coalition partner. Failing that, a second round of elections could be held.
