Indians vote on second biggest polling day

The second most important polling day in India’s multi-phased national elections is taking place with 117 seats in 12 states and territories being decided on Thursday (April 24). Spread over five weeks, the 814 million eligible voters are choosing representatives for the country’s 543-seat lower house of parliament. Opposition leader Narendra Modi of the business-friendly Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is widely expected to become the next prime minister, however it’s unclear whether they’ll manage to win a majority. The ruling Congress party led by Rahul Gandhi has been struggling to gain support from voters after a decade in power because of the country’s economic slowdown, high inflation and several corruption scandals. Results from the 935,000 polling stations are expected on May 16.
