Iraqis flock to Sulaimaniya for rare snowfall

On Tuesday (January 18), schools and public institutions remained closed in the city due to the difficult transport conditions, allowing children to spend time outdoors, build snowmen and hold snowball fights.

Public offices are due to reopen on Thursday (January 20), schools on Saturday (January 22).

Municipality workers were busy cleaning roads hoping to make them safer for transport. Several cars were involved in traffic accidents during the night between Monday and Tuesday, a Sulaimaniya municipality spokesperson, Zardasht Rafiq, told Reuters.

He added that the city center had not witnessed such snowfall in years. Snow usually falls in the mountains surrounding the city during winter.
