Michael Jordan, Bubba Wallace form NASCAR team

Basketball great Michael Jordan is looking to conquer a new sport. He's forming a new NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace as its driver -- the only black driver at NASCAR's top level.

Wallace was thrust into the spotlight earlier this year when he led calls to ban the use of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events.

He was also thought to have been a victim of a racial hate crime when a suspected noose was found in a garage. The U.S. Justice Department later determined the noose was used as a garage door pull-down and no crime was committed.

Jordan -- who is also majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets basketball team -- said in a statement that he saw this as a chance to "educate a new audience and open more opportunities for Black people in racing."

Jordan was a six-time NBA champion during his playing days with the Chicago Bulls and has partnered up with three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin for this new venture.

Other details including the team name, car number, manufacturer, and sponsors for the new team - which will start racing in the 2021 season - will be announced at a future date.
