Orangutan Tears Open Gift for 2nd Birthday Bash at Denver Zoo

Denver Zoo in Colorado is providing daily updates to patrons on the lives of its animals, as part of a national “closed but still caring” campaign prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Staff at the zoo celebrated the second birthday of Sumatran oranguatan Cerah on Wednesday, March 25.

Footage released by the zoo shows Cerah open a birthday present as staff adorn her enclosure with birthday decorations. Cerah and other orangutans can then be seen playing with the new decorations.

“Though our Sumatran orangutan family has full access to their outside space, we decked out the dayroom with everything our orange friends could want to celebrate this toddler in style,” the zoo wrote on Facebook.

The zoo has been closed since March 17 to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

As of Sunday evening, Colorado had reported 2,307 positive cases of COVID-19, and 47 deaths. Credit: Denver Zoo via Storyful
