CANTON, Texas — Authorities say fatalities have been reported and dozens of people were taken to hospitals after a tornado hit a small city in East Texas.
RCMP in Stony Plain, Alta. are investigating an assault of an eight-year-old girl by an unknown man while playing on a sidewalk near her home. Two girls, eight and nine, were playing on a sidewalk near 51st Street and 54th Avenue Friday at 4 p.m., police said in a news release. Kim Mueller told CBC Saturday.
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan offered a full apology to his former comrades-in-arms on Saturday, after claiming to have been the "architect" of Canada's largest battle in Afghanistan. The mea culpa, posted to Facebook, followed what some had seen as a half-hearted apology by Sajjan on Friday for comments he made in a speech earlier this month to a think tank in India. "On my first deployment to Kandahar in 2006, I was kind of thrown in an unforeseen situation and became the architect of an operation called Operation Medusa, where we removed about 1,500 fighters, Taliban fighters, off the battlefield," Sajjan said during his speech in Delhi on April 18.

There is no subway service on Line 1 between St George and Downview stations this weekend due to signal upgrades, the Toronto Transit Commission says. All trains on Line 1 will turn back southbound at St George station. An Ontario woman is missing in Belize along with her American boyfriend, a friend says, and search crews have so far failed to turn up any clues indicating where they may be. Francesca Matus, 52, and her boyfriend, Drew De Voursney, 36, were last seen leaving a bar called Scotty's near Matus's beachfront home in Corozal, about 130 kilometres north of the country's capital. A military airplane crashed into a mountain in Cuba's north-western region of Artemisa on Saturday morning, killing all eight personnel on board, the Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces said. The aircraft, a twin-engined turboprop Antonov AN-26, had taken off at 6:38 a.m. (0638 ET) from Playa Baracoa, just outside Havana, and crashed into the Loma de la Pimienta mountain some 80 km (50 miles) westwards. "The eight military personnel on board, including the crew, died," the ministry said in a statement published by state-run media.

For the past two years, Ashley Lamothe says her family pets have been targeted by complete strangers — with everything from anonymous complaint letters to what she says are attempts to poison her dogs. Since moving into their North Kildonan home, the soon-to-be mother says she's received anonymous complaint letters. The majority of the complaints, she says, revolve around her two dogs barking.
