Poisonous algae shuts down popular German lake
STORY: Poisonous blue-green algae
has shut down Rotter Lake
a popular swimming spot in Germany
Location: Troisdorf, Germany
(Rainer Meilicke, Siegburg Health Authorities)
"Blue-green algae is dangerous for humans and animals. Humans would be at risk of skin irritation if they came into contact with the blue-green algae. If children or pregnant women drank this liquid, they would also absorb the toxin and could get liver and kidney or nerve damage."
Cleaning the lake manually is difficult
Authorities say they're waiting for a storm to
blow the algae away or a cold snap to destroy it
