Polish pilgrims set out on long road to Rome for canonisations
The Catholic church insists on a long road to sainthood, and a long road also awaits Polish pilgrims who have begun their journey to Rome for the canonisation of two Popes, John Paul II and John XXIII, on April 27th. 2000 kilometres lie in front of them and millions of others who will converge on the Vatican for this once-in-a-lifetime event. “Every one of us have their own intentions. Every person from my town asked me to say a prayer for them,” said Master of Polish Knights Brotherhood of Lubawa Miroslaw Lesniewski. Twelve Poles, who belong to the “Knights Brotherhood” founded in the 1400s for selected nobility but which has been revived, will wear medieval costumes and ride on horseback the whole way, the only group of European pilgrims to do so. In all 19 heads of state and 24 prime ministers are expected to attend for the unique double canonisation, the first step towards becoming a saint.
