Protesters Dodge Tear Gas During March in La Paz

Police launched tear gas to disperse protesters gathered on Avenida Mariscal Santa Cruz and in Plaza Mayor de San Francisco in La Paz, Bolivia, on November 13.

These videos show supporters of ex-president Evo Morales chanting, “now yes, civil war,” as they marched in La Paz, and crowds of people running from tear gas near Bolivia’s legislative buildings.

Mass protests calling for Morales to step down had been running for weeks since Bolivia’s October elections, in which Morales was reelected.

Rival pro-Morales have erupted in the wake of his resignation on November 10. Morales and his supporters claimed that the country’s democracy was “in danger of attack by fascist and coup groups.”

In El Alto – a predominately pro-Morales city directly adjacent to La Paz – supporters of Morales and the MAS party (Movement for Socialism) ran through the streets on Monday, according to reports, and burned the El Alto station of Bolivia’s national crime-fighting force, the Fuerza Especial de Lucha Contra el Crimen.

Mexico offered asylum to Morales on Monday, the day after his resignation. Morales accepted and arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday, according to reports.

On Tuesday evening, Jeanine Anez, an opposition senator, declared herself acting president during a session of the legislative assembly. The Bolivian senate recognized her as the new president of Bolivia by “constitutional succession.” Credit: @jazmin.plata via Storyful
