Puerto Rico National Guard Rescues Residents Trapped by Isaias Floodwaters

Tropical Storm Isaias was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane on Friday, July 31, a day after its tropical-storm-force winds and rain inundated the island of Puerto Rico.

Footage from the National Guard shows vehicles and homes in feet of water in Mayagüez on Thursday. Troops are seen carrying a three-month-old baby and helping the child’s parents to safety.

At least 35 people, including two newborn babies, were rescued by the National Guard in Puerto Rico, reports said.

At least two people died in the Dominican Republic as a result of the storm, reports said – a 53-year-old man in Río San Juan, who died after a high-power voltage line fell; and a five-year-old in Altamira, who died when a tree fell on his family’s home.

The US National Hurricane Center predicted the storm would affect the central Bahamas and Florida late Friday into Saturday. Nearly 400,000 customers in Puerto Rico remained without electricity Friday morning, local media reported. Credit: Puerto Rico National Guard via Storyful
