Residents Evacuated as Death Toll Climbs During Indonesian Floods

Thousands of residents were displaced in Indonesia as floods and landslides ravaged southern Sulawesi, bringing the death toll to 68, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman with Indonesia’s disaster agency said on January 28.

More than 5,000 homes had been submerged in the floods, Sutupo said.

In Batang, central Java, a local official touring damaged schools and libraries estimated the cost of damage caused by flooding there would reach billions of rupiah.
