Russian President Vladimir Putin attends Easter service

Russian Orthodox Easter is being celebrated throughout Russia and at tens of thousands of churches across the world. Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill led the Easter service at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. For Russian Orthodox Christians, Easter is their main religious celebration. Several hundred people attended the service including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and his wife Svetlana, and the Mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin. The Patriarch announced the resurrection of Christ with the greeting, “Christ has risen!” Meanwhile in Egypt, Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II led Easter Mass at Cairo’s St. Mark’s Cathedral, praying for security and prosperity. The Orthodox Easter mass was held amid tight security ahead of key presidential elections next month.
